Being Judgmental

Man is born with the ability to think, to differentiate between what is right and wrong. He can analyse situations, people and reach to certain conclusions. While doing all this many a times he becomes judgmental. He starts commenting on people and making generalized statements about others just by observing them in one or two situations or by hearsay. People are judged by our own yardsticks, our parameters without knowing the actual situation or the actual person. In Indian society there are certain rules of behaviour for men and women which are considered to be holy and if somebody does not adhere to them, they are immediately ostracized and looked down upon. As it is the easiest thing to do is to character assassinate a person. The important question at this point is that why are we so judgmental and why nothing happens to these people who constantly poke fingers at others?
We have been taught from a very young age to be quiet, sedate, not to raise our voices, respect other people’s opinion, basically not to confront people even when they are wrong. This gives an opportunity to the so called keepers of social sanity to judge people and condemn them. This trait has penetrated the society to such an extent that we find every other person to be judging others. And the best part is that they will never evaluate themselves or their dear ones. The court is always open for the society at large.
Being judgmental is a serious character flaw because it makes a person loose with his tongue. He looses his integrity which pushes him towards being an animal rather than being a human. There is always the question of morality but the more important and serious question is, morality of whose? Right and wrong are personal perceptions, morality is a very individual issue. I can talk about my principles, my morality, my integrity and I can expect myself to abide by them and be happy. But how can I ask others to follow them. I can share my opinion on various issues, but I will not and should not expect others to live by them. And moreover I cannot and should not feel hurt and consider it a blasphemy when others do not share my opinion. I do not like being judged and I try not to judge others.

  1. Excellently written Ma'am. Today most of the people are living in dichotomy "I am Right/ You are wrong" (Title of a famous book written by Edward De Bono). The important point what you have mentioned is the difference in perspective that people have. And you are right that no one can impose their perspective on others. Otherwise people would be living in prejudices and this world would have been so annoying and without any innovation and creativity.
